Here are 17 examples and a short statement from Dylan Humphreys‘ official website:
Dylan Humphreys is an artist from British Columbia. Painting serves as his materialistic raison d’etre, much of his work grapples with the notion of the psyche present in the manufactured environment . With this in mind, Humphreys’ ideological allies are found in comics, cartoons and hip-hop; as opposed to more technological, or fashionable signifiers of contemporary high-art. Some of his earliest inspirations include MAD Magazine, Spawn comics and Public Enemy, producing a pastoral sensibility which continues similar idealisms carried through Modernist painting. “Cartoonish” is generally an accurate description in the formal attributes of his drawings or paintings, which are nostalgic to principles of style and tradition, and executed through heavily tactile application techniques. Through layering brief moments of these digested experiences and influences, Humphreys attempts to expand the vocabulary of his medium as opposed to confine it. Humphreys is inspired by the mythical, yet boxed with pop and social qualities.
